With less than a month to go before Batman: Caped Crusader returns to Amazon Prime, let’s take a look at what the Dark Knight may face this season.

It feels like ages since we last visited the reimagined Gotham City of Batman: Caped Crusader, but the wait is over, as Amazon Prime has announced that the second season is set to drop on July 31st. I must confess, however, that this season release feels a little different than before, as Season One was extensively teased through a variety of articles and interviews, but this time all we’ve gotten so far is a release of images on June 4th and a trailer on June 24th:
Unfortunately, as we lack actual commentary this time around, I’m reduced to speculation as to what this season may hold. As of July 2nd, there is only confirmation that this season will include appearances by the Riddler, Scarecrow, Mad Hatter, Roxy Rocket, and the Joker, who was teased in the final scene of the Caped Crusader episode “Savage Night” (Vejvoda). Everything else is up in the air, with the fan community madly speculating as to what else they will debut at the end of this month. With that in mind, let’s enter the chat…

THE RETURNING CAST
As you may recall, Season One showcased the initial forging of ties between the few, honest representatives of law and order in Gotham City—Police Commissioner Jim Gordon, Detective Renee Montoya, and Public Defender Barbara Gordon—and the Batman, a street vigilante just beginning to make his name as a force for justice. Together, they took on the systemic corruption in Gotham, both in City Hall and the police department, but their attempt to get District Attorney Harvey Dent to testify ended badly when he was shot in the back by corrupt detective Arnold Flass. Nevertheless, the season ended with the Dark Knight sending a clear signal that he was targeting the primary orchestrator of the city’s rot: crime boss Rupert Thorne.

Based on available materials, it appears that Flass is still member of the Gotham City Police Department. It may be possible that he was able to evade charges, seeing as how Dent was a criminal and the murder weapon was thrown into the harbor by Batman. However, his partner, Harvey Bullock, may not have been so lucky, as Commissioner Gordon stopped him from shooting at Dent and his daughter himself (as of this moment, there is no evidence of any Bullock appearances in Season Two). That said, Flass may not be entirely out of the woods, as the trailer suggests that Gordon has partnered Flass with Renee Montoya, presumably to keep an eye on him.

THE RIDDLER
Dressed in the familiar green-and-purple color scheme and shooting a Tommy gun into a familiar question mark pattern, the Riddler figures heavily into the early press materials. Assuming this is not a misdirect, this could be another case of Executive Producer Bruce Timm taking advantage of second chances, considering how he was dubbed “most difficult villain” by Batman: The Animated Series (BTAS) Producer Paul Dini in the BTAS days (Dini and Kidd). It is unknown if he will leave clues behind but, if the trailer is any indication, this Riddler may just riddle people with bullets.

THORN
While fans are quick to identify this woman as Poison Ivy, I must confess that I am skeptical. Sure, she has Pamela Isley’s BTAS hairstyle and perchance for green, but the creative team would have definitely mentioned an A-Lister like her in the recent IGN article. Besides, there is another character in the DC Universe who shares Ivy’s color scheme and perchance for plant life, as seen below.

Above, left to right: the Golden Age Thorn, the Silver Age Thorn, and the modern Thorn, from the cover of Rose & Thorn #4 (May 2004).
Historically, there have been multiple characters that have gone by the identity of Thorn, each of them being a “Jekyll and Hyde” character possessing some form of dissociative identity disorder. The first version, Rose Canton, appeared in Flash Comics #89 (November 1947) as an enemy of the original Flash, though she would eventually become romantically involved with the original Green Lantern. In her Thorn persona, she had the ability to mentally create and control thorn-covered vines. Next came the Rose Forrest version, who debuted in Superman’s Girl Friend, Lois Lane #105 (October 1970); this incarnation was more of a Metropolis anti-hero than a straight-up villain. While she possessed no powers, she was a formidable athlete and hand-to-hand combatant; this version would later be adapted by writer Gail Simone for her 2004 limited series.

Based on some of the released images, it is possible that she is connected to a criminal act that kills her florist father, leading to Rose having a breakdown and developing a second identity. It is also possible that the creative team adapted some of Poison Ivy’s traits into this character, allowing us to have a Poison Ivy-adjacent character without actually using Poison Ivy.

The released images make it also appear that Thorn hooks up with the aforementioned Riddler, potentially leading them to embark on a “Bonnie and Clyde”-like crime spree across Gotham. On a final note—and this may be a coincidence—I wonder if there might be a connection between Thorn and Rupert Thorne.

THE MAD HATTER
In light of the overblown female Penguin controversy two years ago, the creative team apparently has doubled down with a female Mad Hatter as well. Good for them. Apparently the host of a television show called Hattie’s Tea Party, Mad Hattie (?) apparently wants to sway public opinion against the Dark Knight for some as-yet unidentified reason.

SCARECROW
While not clearly identified in the video, fans speculate that this suited character wearing what appears to be a plague doctor mask is, in fact, the Scarecrow. Assuming that it is, it remains to be seen if the previously referenced Dr. Jonathan Crane is related to this incarnation.

ROXY ROCKET
An original character created by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini, Roxy Rocket debuted in The Batman Adventures Annual #1 (November 1994) before joining the DCAU proper in The New Batman Adventures (TNBA) episode “The Ultimate Thrill.” Now in a from that resembles The Rocketeer, it is unknown how else Roxanne Sutton has changed for Caped Crusader.

THE JOKER
As stated above, the Joker was teased in the Caped Crusader episode “Savage Night,” where he was presented as testing his Joker Venom formula, which kills victims and twists their face into a frozen, rictus grin. Appearing again at the end of the above trailer, there is a considerable amount of anticipation for Timm’s revision of the Clown Prince of Crime, considering the incredible results he co-developed back in the BTAS days. Right now, we have little beyond a few silhouetted images that show his eyes, but we can speculate as to what form this incarnation might take.

Above, left to right: Conrad Veidt as Gwynplaine, from the 1928 film The Man Who Laughs, and a scene from the Joker’s first appearance in Batman #1 (March 1940).
Based on Bruce Timm’s love of early Batman stories, film noir, and German expressionist cinema (“DC,” 02:46:57-02:47:15), I believe that the new Joker will greatly resemble Gwynplaine, with the frozen, unchanging smile, which is probably why we’ve only see him in the shadows so far. With that in mind, please allow me to present a quote from Paul Dini’s November 28, 2012 appearance on the Fatman on Batman podcast where he discussed his philosophy regarding the Joker’s DCAU designs. Specifically, he is referring to the differences between the BTAS and TNBA versions, but I believe there is a relevant thread we could use here:
Bruce and I actually had some fights over it, and I said, “Look, you know, he’s a clown, and—he’s a threatening one—but you gotta keep, you know, clowns are very expressive in their eyes,” and I agree that there are shots of him where he’s got those little rat, you know, pinpoint eyes that are just great and terrifying, but I don’t know that it works all the time, you know? So, I prefer him [in Batman: Mask of the Phantasm], where you can actually see more of the emotion. And I don’t agree, like, some people claim, like, his face should always be frozen in the grin … it just robs him of the emotion. He should be all over the place. (qtd. in Smith, 01:01:56-01:02:30)
Considering how the hook of Caped Crusader was giving Bruce Timm another chance to reimagine Batman his own way, minus the compromises of children’s programming (“DC,” 02:44:20-02:44:47; Schedeen), I could definitely see the Joker’s expressiveness being a sticking point at the beginning, with Timm possibly wanting to have used the immobile, Gwynplaine grin and Dini reminding him that the Joker would benefit from a range of expression, as he would be appearing across 65 episodes (and beyond). However, as he is now potentially only making one appearance in Caped Crusader, now would be the time to honor the Joker’s Golden Age roots.
And now, with the heavy hitters out of the way, it’s time for the lightning round…
THE BIG GOTHAM GRAB BAG

Top row: images from the Caped Crusader Season Two preview. Bottom: a scene from Batman: Strange Days (2014).
In the above top left image, the Riddler’s companion possesses a very familiar head shape, leading me to believe that it may be Dr. Hugo Strange, who appeared in Caped Crusader’s unofficial pilot, Batman: Strange Days. In fact, the above top right image, featuring some kind of rampage, could feature Strange’s Monster Men.

Well, it looks like Harley Quinn is back.

I’m guessing either Barbathos or a revamped Man-Bat.

It looks like this season brings back the old-school Batplane, which we last saw in the aforementioned Batman: Strange Days.

This could be a long shot, but might that zombified fellow be Jason Blood, as seen above right from the TNBA episode “The Demon Within.”

I’m drawing a blank with these two. Considering the presence of fire in both images, perhaps the first one is related to the Scarecrow episode.

Finally, this image was not part of the trailer, but it appears that we will be seeing a return of the orphan Carrie, who first appeared in the Caped Crusader episode “Nocturne.” Furthermore, it appears that she is dressed like the Gray Ghost, which was also referenced in the same episode.

THE FUTURE?
As of this moment, it is unknown whether Batman: Caped Crusader will continue beyond this season. According to previous reports, Prime Video only picked up a two season, twenty-episode order (Holub; “Prime”) and, as of yet, there have been no reports of an extension. Considering the popularity of the series, and the willingness of Prime Video to provide a venue to adult-audience animated shows like Invincible and Hazbin Hotel, I was hoping that further seasons would be forthcoming, but considering its parent company’s current volatility, as well as a new slate of Batman-themed shows currently in the works, it’s anybody’s guess at this point.
Obviously, this page will be updated as more news is released. Stay tuned!
